Abstract:
Studied the use and validity of an instrument designed to measure acquisition of reading skills in Guatemala. Human Ss: 185 normal Guatemalan school-age children (aged 6–7 yrs) (kindergarten students). In a preliminary study, information on which instruments were used to evaluate acquisition of reading skills in Guatemala was obtained by mail survey of 132 kindergarten and primary schools. Information on reading and writing ability was obtained by semistructured interview when Ss entered kindergarten and 14 mo later using 150 Ss who remained in the study. The results were evaluated according to sentence structure, oral reading speed, visual memory, auditory memory, word replication, and comprehension. Test validity was determined. Test used: The ABC Inventory to Determine Kindergarten and School Readiness. An ANOVA and other statistical tests were used.
