Abstract: 
Studied the reliability and validity of 3 instruments designed to assess reading and writing ability. Human Ss: 67 normal male and female Brazilian school-age children (1st graders) (high–middle SES). 73 normal male and female Brazilian school-age children (1st graders) (low–middle SES). Information on reading and writing ability was obtained by questionnaire. The results were evaluated according to age, sex, SES, preschool experience, and specific reading skills. Tests used: The Preschool Skills Diagnostic Test (S. E. Cunha, 1974), the Reading Readiness Test (E. R. Kunz, 1979), the Basic Reading Skills Assessment Instrument (S. A. Leite, 1984) and the Metropolitan Readiness Test (A. M. Poppovic, 1966). Internal consistency, predictive and concurrent validity, subtest and area correlation, difficulty indices, and percentile norms were determined.
