Abstract:
Examined phonological awareness and phonological memory, in order to predict reading and writing abilities. 29 normal children (mean age 6.5 yrs) were assessed with phonological tests at the beginning of 1st grade and with reading and writing tests by the end of 1st grade. A multiple regression analysis showed that combination of phonological awareness and phonological memory scores predicted between 16% and 77% of reading and writing abilities. Results suggest that the evaluation of these abilities at the beginning of 1st grade may be useful in predicting reading and writing disabilities.
